10 Spring/Summer 2018 Trends & Their Sustainable Alternatives

January is all about new beginnings. I don’t know about you, but my 2017 was one huge roller coaster ride. It’s always better to look forward and 2018 is definitely impactful, hopefully, it will be a little more sustainable too. I’ve always loved fashion and pay attention to runways and red carpets.I don’t buy into every trend but I like some of them. Check out my top 10 trends for 2018 and the brands make them in sustainable ways. I’m sure these trends will constantly pop up in my outfits over the next year. If your feeling nostalgic here are some of my favorites from 2017.

Berets

This will be the year of the beret, along with the second year of the female, and the second year of the resistance. Resistance is key, berets are associated with revolutionaries and intellectuals and people want that more than ever.

Purple

Pantone declared a specific shade of ultraviolet the color of the year in 2018. They called the color “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade.” Take it with a grain of salt if you want. I’ve always liked purple.

Embellished Shoes

Pinterest is all in on embellished shoes. Saves for “embellished shoes” are up +222%. From tassels and studs to bows they’ll be all around all year.

Huge Earrings

The fashion week coverage was all about the 80’s bright colors, bold pieces, and big earrings. Drawing directly from the 80’s are these amazing statement earrings which will get you all the way to 2019.

Week 9

 Bold Colors/Prints

Everything got a bit louder this year, and I’m pumped. I was tired of the monochromatic minimalist look that was all about the nude shades and has been going on for what feels like forever. This year embrace your personality and put on go big or go home floral’s and vibrant colors like ruby red, bright pink, and electric blue.

Puffy Sleeves

While the 80’s has been the talk of the town for a while, don’t expect it to go away. Puffy sleeves are having a major moment. The update is a little more tailored and refined but still as in your face as you remember.

Wide legs

Another 90’s throwback is these slouchy wide leg trousers. I’ve read reports of the “season” having a “masculine twist” but honestly I think it’s all about the comfort. Why do boys get all the comfort in their pants?

Gingham

The perfect pattern for summer. This year all the gingham won’t make you look like a picnic table.

Pastels

Pastels were all over the Spring European runways this year. Obviously, Brexit was a much more toned down emotional affair than Trump. There was lavender at Valentino, and Michael Kors, and Erdem, and pastel pinks everywhere from Celine to Preen.

Smocking

Remember those tops from the early 2000’s? I didn’t but the smock top is back and it’s everywhere. It’s on dresses, bathing suits, skirts. What can I say about this one? It’s definitely more flattering.

Trends I’m not excited for:

Plastic- Seriously isn’t the world moving on from plastic> It’s literally killing the oceans.

Sheer- I just have so many problems with practicality. Isn’t it itchy? Doesn’t anyone else get cold. I feel like a Grandma but I’ve never been on board.

Japonica- Maybe 2018 will be the year we all learn to not appropriate culture. I like some of it, but can see it getting racist fast and into murky territory fast.
