Syona Home: Cotton Sheets Helping to Prevent Suicide

Syona Home: Cotton Sheets Helping to Prevent Suicide

The Problem

In the past 20 years, the suicide rate among Indian farmers has exploded. By 2015, nearly 300,000 farmers have ended their lives by ingesting pesticides or by hanging themselves. It’s a staggering, tragic number, that isn’t often focused on in the U.S. In 2014, India aired a documentary highlighting the suicides and the loan shark seed system that fostered it.

What Does This Have to do With Bedding?

Sukanta Nanda, Rohit Arabind, and Namrata Panda wanted to help bring systematic change within India. The main way to do this is through empowering farmers with sustainable growth through access to ethical partnerships and eco-friendly farming practices. So they launched Syona Home, a sustainable luxury bedding company. It has everything I look for in a brand- fair-trade practices, a sustainable supply-chain, certifications (GOTS & Fair Trade), and obviously an amazing quality product.

How Are These Sheets Made?

Farmers from a sustainable farmer’s association! Syona Home sources its cotton from partner Chetna Organic. They start at the ground level using natural seeds, fertilizers, and pest control. They then work with locals to provide sustainable financing to minimize the risk from credit markets. They have more than 35,000 farmers and they are continuing to grow. From the farm to the factory Syona Home keeps everything fair-trade. The factory where the sheets are produced has no child labor, overtime compensation, and a safe environment.

What’s to Love About These Sheets?

  1. The price. There are no markups because the bedding comes directly to you from the factory. This also keeps the carbon emissions from the bedding down because it isn’t going to a distributor, and a retail space. The price is also 50% less than the same luxury brands and Syona Home does this using organic cotton and paying fair wages.
  2. The feel. These sheets are soft. SO soft. Amazing soft. Honestly, they feel a little bit like silk, but it’s definitely organic cotton.
  3. The style. These sheets come in three classic colors: white, taupe, and light blue. It keeps your bed neutral and peaceful so that you have a comfortable place to relax. It also comes wrapped in a gift box! So getting there is like a little present to yourself (Or if you are looking for a nice gift for someone.)
