30 Oct 10 Sustainable Leather Jackets Perfect for Fall
Leather jackets are a fall staple. They add a bit of oomph and psychological toughness to your look and are also a great barrier against those first winds and warmer winter days. But leather is one of fashion’s most toxic fabrics. From toxic dyes and the obvious problem with the animal slaughter, it’s one most obvious fabrics to cut out of your buying habits. But I happen to agree with Livia Firth that, “it’s not realistic to think we are going to live in a world without leather, or wool.” Instead, we should learn to live in a world that does leather better. This roundup features jackets made of either recycled, vegan or sustainably tanned leather! Let me know your favorite in the comments below!
Urban Renewal Vintage X PelecheCoco
This leather jacket is a collaboration between two upcycling brands. Urban Renewal Vintage is Urban Outfitters sustainable undertaking and is made with vintage fabrics. PelecheCoco makes all of their leather products from recycled scrap leather. Which is what this jacket is!
Reformation
This jacket is from the Reformation X Veda collaboration. It takes Veda’s leather styles and combines it with Reformations eco-ethos. The jackets are made with vegetable tanned leather and have sustainable twill lining.
The Sway
The Sway sources all reclaimed and excess leather for their jackets. The scraps are then tanned with vegetable dye and the jackets are ethically produced at a family run factory in Pakistan. The design inspiration comes from motorcycle culture past and present, and you can definitely see that influence in this cropped moto style.
Ecovibe Apparel
Most of the leather jackets I’ve picked are black. But this one is grey! I especially love the hood and gloves for added warmth. It’s made of PU leather and is PETA Approved.
Stella McCartney
Stella McCartney has always been a vegan designer, so it’s no surprise that her leather jacket is skin-free leather. It’s made with her alter-nappa leather, material that is entirely cruelty-free. She also includes recycled metals and recycled polyesters in her designs.
Altiir
Would you believe pineapples have a similar texture to leather? Altiir uses innovative Pinatex leather that comes from pineapples, like leather it softens and ages over time, but it’s cruelty-free.
HIRAETH
Hiraeth is a new vegan label from Rooney Mara, Sara Schloat and Chrys Wong. The label uses no animal products and treats animals as well as people ethically. The line is produced in L.A.
Nanushka
Nanushka is made in Budapest and is cruelty-free. Founder Sandra Sandor also always emphasizes the environmental impact that not using leather has- there are no toxic chemicals like chrome, and her production is REACH certified.
Deadwood
These jackets are made using recycled leather that is sourced from vintage garments. Deadwood is ify on their claim to sustainability because the jackets are made with leather that is environmentally damaging. But I am definitely on the side of use it instead of simply waste it. The look is designed to be classic, an investment piece that can be paired with jeans or a dress.
